I met Jane Stockdale a few years ago when she came in to the studio I worked at at the time to show her photos. Since then she has quickly elevated herself to one of the best documentary photographers around these parts.

As a photographer she has a breathtaking ability to not only get herself in places and situations that seem near impossible and potentially life threatening, but also dig out a perfect shot that captures the mood and feeling of the environment before her.

When I first met her I was blown away by her photos and stories and nothing has changed today. I caught up with her in between her busy schedule to ask her a few questions.

Hi Jane. Tell us a little about yourself and how you got to where you are now.

I live in London, studied in Edinburgh and am from a little town in the north of Scotland. I moved to the states when I was 16 to go to high school in New Jersey, started photographing bands on my dads canon AE1-program and have pretty much been taking photos ever since.

Am I right in saying you actually studied Graphic Design at Uni? How did this end up sculpting you into a photographer?

I went to art school in Edinburgh and started off studying photography but switched to graphic design after a year as I found fine-art photography to be a bit too pretentious. Graphic Design was much more fun, thoughtful, ideas based and all about looking at ways to communicate.

You have a lot of great documentary photography in you portfolio. Is this your favourite outlet in which to express yourself as a photographer?

Yeah I love working on documentary projects. I love collaborating and the simplicity of documenting something as it is.

If you had to choose one person to shoot, who would it be and why?

The film composer Ennio Morricone - he’s 82 now and an absolute legend.

Could you tell us about something you’ve seen recently that has blown you away?

Seeing Ennio Morricone at the Royal Albert Hall performing with an 100 piece orchestra and 100 piece choir – magic!

You obviously work with and around some amazingly creative people, would you care to share some of your top pics we should check out?

And finally, a question us at OWTIC like to ask; how would you describe your perfect Saturday out and about?

I love Saturdays when you have no expectations but something really unpredictable happens. Also just hanging out in the park, a BBQ and some street beers.
