It’s starting to feel alot like christmas, absolute genius from The Maccabees.
Patrick Grant: How I Get Dressed from Chris Floyd on Vimeo.
Patrick Grant is a paragon of gentlemen. Pursuant to his completion of an MBA in British Heritage Luxury Brands at Oxford University in 2006, Grant bought and resurrected impoverished Savile Row tailors Norton & Sons. At a comparatively tender 35 years old, he currently wears the mantle of Saville Row’s youngest Guv’nor. Searingly marketable, as both businessman and sartorial ambassador, this clip find’s our man effusing about the process of getting dressed.
N.B. On a personal note, the older I get the more I find enjoyment in things being ‘just so’. Space, clothes, affairs, alcohol… Perhaps it’s a necessary antidote to the vicissitudes of hyper-connected city life. Either way, it is exactly this type of urbane pedantry that makes this clip so appealing to me.
I’m always raging come Thursday. As hard as it is to reconcile my fervid desire to get loose with Friday’s inevitable dive in productivity, this week’s indulgence is something of a no-brainer. On Thursday Metronomy will be performing at The Barbican to a specially-created film by award winning illustrator and video director Ferry Gouw, who has directed and produced music videos for artists including: Lightspeed Champion , Mystery Jets, Vampire Weekend, Simian Mobile Disco and Bloc Party. Support comes courtesy of masked producer and remixer du jour SBTRKT, providing a live soundtrack to a selection of high-energy short films from the Bicycle Film Festival archive. Later, superb Wrexam four-piece Gallops will be doing a post-show set on the Barbican Clubstage. Friday’s a write-off..
Swedish born, New York resident Patrik Ervell has been one of my favourite designers since I picked up one of his white club-collar shirts at Nom De Guerre, NYC in March. In this video for his 2011 Spring/Summer show he previews the collection in what appears to be a gutted office space, with the models walking a runway made from piles of the Financial Times. Consonant with the industry’s current love affair with muted tones, Ervell presents another superb collection of elegant yet understated staples- slim knit trousers, short-sleeve button down shirts and cropped mandarin-style skinny-lapelled jackets paired with fitted caps and backpacks. Sadly, with no UK distributors (Oi Polloi told me they simply couldn’t make the margins), devotee’s will have to look further afield for their fix. I’ll be among them.

Now every berk in the world and his dog has a pair of sodding Wayfarers, the pressure is back on to drop some nickel-brass alloy on a nice pair of cans and claw back the same admiring looks you won back when you first blagged a pair of 5022′s off your dad. Once again, the time has come to dispose of that which was hitherto desirable, but what to choose?
Selecting a suitable pair of sunglasses is no trifling matter and you need look no further than the hoards of bug-eyed girls sporting Dennis Taylor’s cast-offs to appreciate that something complimentary to your facial structure is more important than blindly following trend.
Much of Wayfarers’ enduring popularity can be attributed to their iconic lines. Neither ovoid nor angular they occupy a pleasing middle ground that flatters sculpted cheekbones and recessive chins alike. Pretty much everyone looks good in Wayfarers which is probably why we’re all clinging onto them like photo’s of ex girlfriends and Barbour Bedales.
Opinions aside, there are a slew of alternatives knocking about on and offline this summer and at prices to suit every pocket. The high street shows no sign of slowing down the rip and release model that sees big retailers like ASOS and Topshop reproducing designer frames for pocket money. Bad luck for snobs, thumbs up if you want to cop a pair of reasonable Moscot copies for the price of a couple of ales

It’s been a good year for fashion behemoths Ralph Lauren, who have presented one of their strongest collections to date.
If you can pull them off these Illesteva Leonards are the absolute business, both the honey and contrasting tortoiseshell colourways are very nice indeed.
Mosely Tribes, an imprint for Eyewear heavyweight’s Oliver Peoples are another burgeoning US brand yet to make a serious impression on European Shores. Their Lyndel model is especially snappy and bang on trend with keyhole detailing and acetate frame. Uk distributors, please stand up.
