It’s been a while since I posted anything so it’s about time for a new slice of self-congratulatory promotion. This is a new club mix I made for Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label to go alongside a piece on why Gonzales’ Take Me To Broadway means so much to me as a DJ. It’s all in celebration of Phantasy’s next single, Erol Alkan’s rework of Chilly’s Never Stop (out 06/09/10). You can read the whole thing here. The artwork is by a good friend and amazing designer Kevin Scully who works under the name Biology Project. You need to check him out!

Now every berk in the world and his dog has a pair of sodding Wayfarers, the pressure is back on to drop some nickel-brass alloy on a nice pair of cans and claw back the same admiring looks you won back when you first blagged a pair of 5022′s off your dad. Once again, the time has come to dispose of that which was hitherto desirable, but what to choose?

Selecting a suitable pair of sunglasses is no trifling matter and you need look no further than the hoards of bug-eyed girls sporting Dennis Taylor’s cast-offs to appreciate that something complimentary to your facial structure is more important than blindly following trend.

Much of Wayfarers’ enduring popularity can be attributed to their iconic lines. Neither ovoid nor angular they occupy a pleasing middle ground that flatters sculpted cheekbones and recessive chins alike. Pretty much everyone looks good in Wayfarers which is probably why we’re all clinging onto them like photo’s of ex girlfriends and Barbour Bedales.

Opinions aside, there are a slew of alternatives knocking about on and offline this summer and at prices to suit every pocket. The high street shows no sign of slowing down the rip and release model that sees big retailers like ASOS and Topshop reproducing designer frames for pocket money. Bad luck for snobs, thumbs up if you want to cop a pair of reasonable Moscot copies for the price of a couple of ales

It’s been a good year for fashion behemoths Ralph Lauren, who have presented one of their strongest collections to date.

If you can pull them off these Illesteva Leonards are the absolute business, both the honey and contrasting tortoiseshell colourways are very nice indeed.

Mosely Tribes, an imprint for Eyewear heavyweight’s Oliver Peoples are another burgeoning US brand yet to make a serious impression on European Shores. Their Lyndel model is especially snappy and bang on trend with keyhole detailing and acetate frame. Uk distributors, please stand up.

So… as a result of drinking too much beer whilst the world cup has been on, a couple of trips away and a bit of site development, we’ve all been incredibly slack this last couple of weeks with posting. But anyway, we’re back, no longer distracted by the beautiful game and and ready to dig out some wicked shit from around the world.

First up, check out these amazing black and white underwater photos by Wayne Levin. The flatness of these desaturated shots captures something about this environment that I don’t think you get with colour photography – a brilliant representation of an unknown, eerie world. Make sure you go over to his site to check out some more.

Cafe OTO in Dalston has some really interesting (and pretty out there) things happening. They’re putting on truly leftfield music almost seven nights a week. It’s reassuring to know that places like this can still exist. A few people have told me about this event on Thursday. The flyer explains it all – plus it looks great.

Record Club: INXS “Need You Tonight” from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.

Beck is the best! He’s definitely been one of the most important figures in music over the last two decades. Check out his new Album Club project where he gets a load of musicians together to record an entire album in a day. This time it was INXS’ ‘Kick’.

This month, the Subject60 parties are touring Berlin, Paris, Madrid and Milan with the London leg taking place at a huge warehouse space in Holborn last night. My grandparents own a Volvo so I wasn’t expecting much but the party turned out pretty damn well. A never ending supply of drink helped, sure, but so did the amazing maze-like layout and decent soundsystem. And then Lykke Li played live. And was great. Everyone seemed startled by how many of her songs they actually love and know all the words to. That Facehunter dude was wandering about so there was a bit too much hair flicking going on but, y’know, back to the free bar innit. All in all, pretty safe (note: I stole this joke from someone else.)

Paradise Garage 1981 from the site A Garage Tribute

Here’s a recording of my set from the weekend at Hot Boy Dancing Spot. A small, initimate and sweaty basement of a Dalston gay club, packed from the second the doors open and everyone dancing the whole time. It’s hard to find a more perfect place to DJ at.

Virgil Howe’s dad was in Yes. I’m not sure how I feel about that. His mix of hyper disco is pretty great, though – this is intense club music in the best possible way. He’s putting on a night at the Big Chill House on 5th June where he’ll be ‘creating’ a live DJ set by using samples and a bassist, whilst drumming over the top. Then the dude from The Horrors is playing records afterwards. It’ll definitely be the most interesting thing going on in Kings Cross that evening.
